ATA-PI CD-ROM Drive —
Upgrade Note
General instructions for installing a 5.25" device in the Apricot
XEN-PC’s removable media drive bay are included in the documentation supplied with
the computer.
This Upgrade Note provides additional information to help you fit and
cable the ATA-PI CD-ROM drive correctly. Two cables are provided with the drive: a signal
(ribbon) cable, and a CD-audio cable. The signal cable is aways required. The CD-audio
cable is needed only if you are upgrading an Apricot XEN-PCls computer fitted with a
multimedia daughterboard.
- Before installing the drive, ensure that the Master/Slave/CSEL jumper on
the rear of the drive is set to the Master position.
- The drive should only be connected to the motherboard’s secondary
ATA/IDE interface. Apricot does not recommend the use of this drive on the primary ATA/IDE
interface, either directly or "daisy-chained" to a hard disk drive. (The primary
ATA/IDE interface is on the PCI local bus; there would be no benefit in attaching a
relatively "slow" device such as a CD-ROM to this interface.).
- There is a "kink" or fold in the signal (ribbon) cable. The end
nearest the fold plugs into the motherboard; the other end plugs into the rear of the
drive.
- Hint: In an Apricot XEN-PCls you may find it easier to plug the signal
cable into the motherboard before installing the CD-ROM in the bay. Otherwise the
multimedia daughterboard might get in the way.
- In an Apricot XEN-PCls system, you should connect the CD-audio cable
between the drive and the multimedia daughterboard. Use the diagram provided in the
Networking, Audio and Security Supplement to locate the daughterboard’s CD-audio
connector.
An MS-DOS device driver ATAPI_CD.SYS is provided with the drive; for
more information, view the accompanying Windows Help file.
