System Overview

The Apricot EPx has been designed for the power user. Within the sturdy moulded casing of this formidable desktop system is a high performance infrastructure coupled with the expansion capacity to keep in step with your changing needs - whatever they may be.

The start of Something Big

The EPx is a fully fledged EISA-based system with eight 32-bit expansion slots. Two slots also feature VL Local Bus extensions to ensure compatibility with some of the fastest video option boards available. Future growth in mass storage is accommodated by three half-height 5.25" bays as well as two half-height 3.5" bays. A power supply offering up to 200 watts of power keeps the expansion potential well fed.

The Heart of the Matter

The EPx is available with three powerful processor options, each with 256KB of external cache, while the unique modular system makes processor upgrades easy from the entry level Intel 486DX2-66 through Pentium-60 up to the last word in desktop performance, the Pentium-90. Memory capacity matches the processing power. The 486 model is supplied with 4MB, while the Pentium models are both available with either 8 or 16MB from a possible 128MB. All systems are upgradeable to 256MB.

Storage Selection

To match even the largest desktop storage needs, the EPx is available with a choice of high speed drives, ranging in size from 270MB up to 540MB.

What You See...

The choice of 14" or 17" low emission monitors are driven by the Mach ATI controller which exploits to the full its local bus connection with the processor. To ensure top performance from the beginning, all variants include a complete 2MB of video RAM

Features & Benefits

Range of High Power Processors

This heavy-weight performance range is offered with a choice of three processors beginning with the Intel 486DX2-66. Next on the list is the Intel Pentium running at 60MHz and topping the range is the Pentium-90. All processor options are upgradeable to keep pace with your changing requirements.

Expandable Cache

All models are supplied with 256KB secondary cache as standard and, like most of the features of the EPx, this too can be expanded further as required. Using industry-standard SRAM memory chips, the cache of the EPx can be increased to 1MB to provide full assistance to the processor.

EISA and VL Local Bus Expansion

With eight EISA 32-bit expansion slots, the EPx is ready and waiting to be customised into a multitude of high performance roles. Each slot is capable of accommodating not only EISA expansion boards, but also standard ISA options. The inclusion of two VL Local Bus extensions means that the EPx is also fully compatible with the large line-up of fast industry-standard video controllers.

Triple 5.25" and Dual 3.5" Drive Bays

By providing copious storage bay space the EPx offers massive expansion potential. The three 5.25" bays are located at the front of the system with knock-out panels for removable media. Each of the bays can be used for separate devices such as CD-ROMs or tape streamers or, if necessary, two bays can be used in conjunction for one large device.

High capacity, high speed hard drives

A full range of hard drive options permits the storage capacity to be tailored to meet all requirements.

200 Watt Power Supply

The heavy duty power supply ensures that there is more than sufficient support for the variety of peripherals and storage options that are likely to be fitted into the EPx.

Video acceleration

The stunning video performance of the EPx models is made possible by the use of accelerated local bus video processors. Using the 32-bit local bus to couple each video accelerator to the main system processor ensures that even the most graphically intensive applications move like lightening.

High resolution 14", 15" and 17" Monitors

Each EPx is supplied with a choice of high resolution monitors that perfectly match the fast graphic capabilities of the systems. All monitor options meet and exceed the latest European standards for safety and emissions.

Dedicated mouse port

A PS/2-compatible port is fitted specifically for use by the supplied mouse. This means that both serial ports are free for use by other devices.

Industry-Standard

By adhering to the latest computer industry standards, Apricot engineers have ensured that the EPx can be easily upgraded with widely available components and peripherals.

Built in the UK by Apricot

Confidence in the design, build quality and reliability of the EPx is well founded. The BS5750 accredited Apricot research and development labs and factory in Scotland have been building quality into every computer system for more than twelve years.
