System Overview

High performance and versatility are two essential factors in the continuing success of the Apricot XEN-PC range. In this latest line-up, the super fast Intel Pentium processor has been incorporated to provide one of the fastest desktop systems available. Combined with the Apricot engineered system design, the incredible 120MHz Pentium processor sets the agenda for the range as a whole.

Graphically Speaking

Graphical user interfaces such as Windows, NT and OS/2 have settled as the norm for all tasks from word processing to video editing. This is why all XEN-PC models include industry-leading graphic acceleration coprocessors to provide the very best on-screen performance. All models use local bus technology to closely integrate the video circuitry. The entire range features the Cirrus Logic GD5434 with 1MB video RAM, except for the XEN-PC 590 and 5120 which have 2MB as standard.

For those seeking the ultimate in system and graphic performance, the new Matrox MGA Impression Plus board, rated at over 40 million WinMarks using the new WinMarks benchmarking system - WinBench Vr4, is available as an optional extra.

Room to Manoeuvre

As software packages and the files that they create become ever-more space consuming, a selection of high capacity hard drives are matched to the expected requirements of each model.

The Start of a Lasting Partnership

When your requirements change, so too will your XEN-PC. Expanding each model is straightforward and, most importantly, fully industry standard. Each model uses widely available SIMM memory modules, processor upgrades, storage devices and peripheral boards.

Features and Benefits

From 486DX2-66 to Pentium-120

A range of processor options allows the correct configuration to be matched exactly to your performance and budget requirements. As those requirements change, the system processor can then be upgraded to meet new demands. Industry-standard processor sockets make upgrading to next generation processors a quick and easy task.

Flexible memory options

Every XEN-PC is ready from the outset to tackle Windows, OS/2 and other memory intensive applications. Upgrading is made easy and cost effective using industry standard SIMMs (single, in-line, memory modules) which are widely available.

High speed local bus

To provide the fastest possible route for data, all XEN-PC models incorporate local bus technology to join the processor to key peripheral devices. Additionally, the Pentium models provide a PCI expansion slot to allow add-in boards to advantage of the closely coupled 32-bit bus.

Video acceleration

The stunning video performance of the XEN-PC models is made possible by the use of accelerated local bus video processors. Using the 32-bit local bus to couple each video accelerator to the main system processor ensures that even the most graphically intensive applications move like lightening.

Video RAM

A minimum of 1MB video RAM means that every XEN-PC is capable of providing non-interlaced, high resolutions straight from the box. Using one of the optional, ultra high performance graphics accelerator boards, you can select resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 at 65,000 colours or take advantage of 16.8 million photo-realistic colours at 1280 x 1024.

High resolution 14", 15" and 17" Monitors

Each XEN-PC is supplied with a choice of high resolution monitors that perfectly match the fast graphic capabilities of the systems. All monitor options meet and exceed the latest European standards for safety and emissions.

High capacity, high speed hard drives

A full range of hard drive options permits the storage capacity to be tailored to individual needs. Among the options the range now includes a high speed 1GB IDE drive.

Parallel and dual serial ports

Quick and easy connection to external devices is made possible by the on-board parallel and serial ports. The parallel port is bi-directional to support two-way communications with intelligent printers.

Dedicated mouse port

A PS/2 compatible port is fitted specifically for use by the supplied mouse. This means that both standard serial ports are free for use by other devices.

Industry-Standard

By adhering to the latest computer industry standards, Apricot engineers have ensured that the XEN-PC can be easily upgraded with widely available components and peripherals.

Stylish design

In this age of dreary desktop boxes, the XEN-PC provides a refreshing touch of practical elegance and style.

Built in the UK by Apricot

With BS5750 (ISO 9000) accreditation from sales, marketing, research and development through to manufacture in Scotland, Apricot have been building quality into every computer system for more than twelve years.
