Compatibility of Disks
If you have formatted a hard disk to a single partition of greater than
32 MB with MS-DOS Version 4.01, it will not be recognised if booting from earlier versions
of DOS. This is due to the new partitioning methods introduced with MS-DOS version 4.01.
It is important to note that disks formatted on old Apricot Generic
equipment (PC, XEN, F and Apricot Portable ranges) are NOT supported under MS-DOS Version
4 as they were with previous versions of Apricot MS-DOS.
MS-DOS Version 4.01, FORMAT.COM
The Apricot version of the Format program has now been dropped as
Microsoft's MS-DOS 4 version has improved switches for selecting the disk density.
Microsoft have added to the /N: (number of sectors) and /T (number of tracks) switches, a
new /F: (format density). This replaces the /DD and /HD switches on the Apricot FORMAT and
should be used as follows:
FORMAT A: /F:720 (where A: is the drive letter and 720
the required density.)
Possible densities are :-
1440 High density 3.5" (default)
1200 High density 5.25" (default)
720 Double density 3.5"
360 Double density 5.25"
180 Single sided 5.25"
160 Single sided 5.25"
