SCSI Sytos/MS DOS 3.* and Large Hard Disks

A problem may be seen on VX FT and VX1000M machines when using SCSI SYTOS to make tape backups. If the "DISK" backup option is selected from the menu as opposed to the "FILE BY FILE" method, then the error message "NOT ENOUGH MEMORY TO HOLD DIRECTORY BUFFER" may be displayed and SYTOS will exit. This is caused by a combination of nested sub-directories and large logical sectors; the large logical sector size being a function of the method used for coping with large hard disks with MS DOS 3.

For example, with a 3K logical sector size on the hard disk, SYTOS may happily back up the following nested subdirectories from the root:-

\sub1\sub2\sub3\sub4\sub5\sub6\sub7\sub8

whereas:-

\sub1\sub2\sub3\sub4\sub5\sub6\sub7\sub8\sub9

will overflow the directory buffer and produce the error.

If this problem occurs, then the following options are available:-

  • Use "FILE BY FILE" method of backup.
  • Reduce number of nested subdirectories.
  • Reduce the hard disk partition size.
  • Use MS-DOS 4 or later.
