Keyboard Issues - AT Range

Hardware Late model XEN-i 286/30 and VX WS with IBM EECO 102 Keyboard.
XEN-S range until December 1989.
Qi range until December 1989.
Software Various applications, Excel, Supercalc V, Wordstar.
Symptom Keyboard locks up during software package operation. Extra 2's and 8's are added to text during use of optional arrow keys. Shift and Alt mode are locked on during operation of application.
Cause The major cause of this problem is the version on firmware in the keyboard. EECO have issued a number of different versions. Any below 107 can cause one of the above problems. Versions - 096, 098, 102, 107.
How to identify the version of keyboard.
Any product shipped before 1st December 1989 will have a firmware version pre 107. By removing the rear cover of the keyboard, locate ICU1 and use the identification code on top of the IC to determine which version of the firmware is fitted.

MS 0324096 = 096

MS 0234102 = 102 etc.

The following item will also have to be checked: MSCALC.SYS is replaced by ANSI.SYS and KEYB.UK.
Cure Check the configuration and versions installed, and install ANSI.SYS and KEYB.UK where necessary.
Upgrade the keyboard to version 107. This action will resolve the majority of the problems. Where problems persist also check the following:
Windows and Excel: check the version of Windows is 2.11 or later. Wordstar 5: ensure the keyboard rate is adjusted (see Technical Bulletin P 2.5.13).
Issues XEN-S with Supercalc and above memory drivers: there is one outstanding problem with this configuration, which is where the numeric keys are used for cursor control, 2's 4's 6's and 8's can be left in the spreadsheet when moving between cells. To overcome this problem the free of charge memory drivers AEMM386.SYS and EMM386.SYS have to be replaced by QEMM.SYS at a RRP cost of £80.

Implementation for exchanging the keyboards is via computer maintenance.

Where a dealer continues to have an unresolved problem after all the above steps have been taken, the full details of the configuration of hardware and software and version number plus a description of the failure should be sent to Apricot Support.
