Quantum IDE HDD Power Saving Issues

XEN-PC 486

Drives developed prior to the standardisation of the BIOS Auto Power Saving Function i.e.

Quantum Maverick drives with firmware A06.06.07 or earlier.

Were not developed to support this BIOS feature.

If this option is enabled, they could potentially exhibit a problem if the HD is AUTO powered down while carrying out a write to the drive. This problem exhibits itself mainly in FAT errors. Drives with 06.06.07 firmware can be identified by the label on the IDE connector.

REV 02-G indicates firmware A06.06.07 NO SUPPORT

Later drives with firmware A06.0A are designed to support the BIOS Auto Power Saving Function and do not suffer from the potential corruption problem.

REV 03-J indicates firmware A06.0A POWER SAVING SUPPORT

To simplify field issues we recommend that the HD Auto Power Saving Function is turned OFF in the BIOS on 486 XEN-PC systems.

If you are purchasing drives from third party suppliers, you need to confirm that the drives conform to correct specification, before configuring the CMOS.

ENGINEERS VISITING A SITE SHOULD DISABLE THIS OPTION IN THE BIOS AS STANDARD.
