Drivers for Sony CDU77E CD-ROM drive

There are three potential issues with the new CDU77E IDE CD-ROM drive.

  1. Drives with Microcode 1.0e fitted (build level BB), may hang, if the machine is soft booted (using CTRL ALT DEL) whilst the drive is still being accessed. Machines with a Jade motherboard (models RE & RF) will show a CMOS error and the CD-ROM driver will not load. However, machines fitted with the P2 motherboard (models RC & RD) do not show the same symptoms. This problem does not occur on machines fitted with a PCI IDE Interface (as fitted to Diamond motherboards) only on Jade and P2 machines.

It is advised not to reboot the machine whilst the CD-ROM is still in use (The access light will be flashing amber).

  2. It is recommended that only ATAPI_CD.SYS version 2.24a or later be used with the Sony CDU77E Drive. This can be found on the Apricot Bulletin Board in Area 41 and is listed as IDE_CD.EXE and it may require extra command line switches added.

  3. The Apricot ASPI to ATAPI driver (TES229.SYS) that is used in conjunction with TES016 for diagnostic purposes must be Version 1.03. This must be checked for TES016 to function correctly with the new drive.
