MS540 Not seeing CD-ROM Drive after system crash from Games CD's

THIS IPB SUPERCEEDS IPB4170 DATED 16th January 1996.

It has been found that if a user exits from one of the in box games without using the correct sequence, a missing Drive D error or similar shows on reboot.

Detailed below is the whole process:

  1. User double clicks game icon.

  2. Windows 95 prompts user that machine is going to be rebooted to run the game.

  3. Windows 95 reboot the machine, renames AUTOEXEC.BAT to AUTOEXEC.WOS, CONFIG.SYS to CONFIG.WOS and creates new AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files based on the text in the advanced properties of the shortcut.

  4. User removes CD and switches off machine whilst still in game.

  5. User switches on machine.

  6. Windows 95 tries to bootup the machine back into the game and reports error.

  7. User contacts dealer for help.

To rectify the fault the following steps must be taken:

From restart.

  1. Ask user to switch on machine

  2. When message "Windows 95 is now starting your MS-DOS based program, press Esc now to cancel MS-DOS mode and Restart Windows 95" appears on the screen, get end user to press the Escape key. The machine should now restart Windows 95 correctly.

If the error keeps repeating itself.

The syntax "Abort Retry Fail" is repeated. The machine must be switched off and on again and the function key F8 pressed when the syntax "Starting Windows 95" appears. This will then go into the Microsoft Startup menu. Option 3 is to be used to boot into the Windows Safe Mode. When in the Safe Mode choose the My Computer option and select drive C. The Autoexec.Bat and Config.Sys files need to be deleted and the system shut down and rebooted.
