Installing Windows 3 on VX-Net 3.14

We have recently had dealers reporting installation problems when setting up Windows 3 on a VX-NET system. The main problem seems to be that once Windows 3 has been installed, the File Manager fails to work with a "CANNOT FIND DRIVE ?:" error. This has been found to be the case when the setup program is used to install the shared copy of Windows to the network. The solution is to run a program called 'expand' as in the instructions below:

  1. Create an application in NETGEN and assign it to all users ( in this example we use W: ).
  2. Logon to the network and change to W: and create a batch file called "EXPALL.BAT" which contains the following commands:
    • a:
      for %%i in (*.*) do w:\expand %%i w:\%%i
      w:
  3. Insert the Windows 3 disk 2 and type the following:
  4. copy a:expand.exe w:\
  5. Change to W: and run the batch file as follows:
  6. expall a:*.* w:\
  7. Repeat this for each of the 4 Windows disks.

  8. Logon to the network as each Windows user in turn and change to W:. Run the SETUP program using the following syntax:-
  9. setup /n /i
  10. The setup program will copy the workstation specific Windows startup files to a local area, as specified during the installation - usually in U:\WINDOWS. Windows can then be executed in the usual way.

NB: These instructions can be found on page 553 of the Windows 3 manual.
