Windows 3 - DOS 5 and WINA20.386

Windows 3 requires "WINA20.386" to be found in the root directory of the disk from which the system is booted. This presents no major problems when booting from a hard disk or even from a floppy. If you have a diskless or remote booting workstation however, your system may not have a floppy drive or the location of the "boot disk" may be temporary and therefore no longer exist once the boot is complete.

The solution to this problem is to move WINA20.386 and to then tell the system its new location. This requires the editing of two files, CONFIG.SYS and SYSTEM.INI.

Add the following lines to the respective files;

CONFIG.SYS:

::SWITCHES=/W
:

SYSTEM.INI:

:[386Enh]
:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\WINA20.386
:

"WINA20.386", can be placed anywhere on your system, provided the path to it is correctly specified within SYSTEM.INI.
