NetWare 386 (3.11) and the Apricot Configuration
Service
The standard Apricot installation of NetWare 3.11 under the
configuration service sets up only one volume, SYS: and this is 15MB, regardless of the
total disk size.
The reason for this is to allow the dealer total control over how he
wants his system configured, while cutting out the time-consuming hardware set-up and of
course the disk swapping. Also the size of the SYS: volume can be increased quite easily
without loss of data, but it cannot be decreased without deleting the volume and setting
it up from scratch (as it would have to be if the default SYS: volume used all of the
available disk space).
Should you wish to increase SYS:, the steps involved are as follows;
- Start the server in the normal way
- Switch to the console
- Load "INSTALL"
- Select "Volume Options"
- Select "SYS:"
- Select "Volume Segments: (select for list)"
- Choose the new size for SYS:
General Notes:
Care should be taken as to which device drivers are loaded in the files
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. A 3.11 NetWare server does NOT require a CONFIG.SYS, and the
AUTOEXEC.BAT need only run "SERVER.EXE".
If your server has a VGA mono monitor, you should also run "AMODE
VGA=COL" in the AUTOEXEC.BAT (prior to loading SERVER.EXE), as this enables full
advantage to be gained from attaching to the server using RCONSOLE from a system with a
colour screen (i.e. you will get colour displays as opposed to monochrome).
Some problems have also been found when using DOS 4 on the boot
partition. If problems are encountered, try using DOS 3.3 or DOS 5.
