Installing NetWare v4.0 onto FT//s &
FT//e with more than 16MB of RAM
When installing NetWare v4.0 onto systems with more than 16MB of RAM, it
is possible to load the relevant Adaptec or BusLogic drivers with support for more than
16MB of system memory. For the drivers to support more than 16MB of RAM, the following SET
parameter must be defined in STARTUP.NCF before the relevant driver is loaded.
SET RESERVED BUFFERS BELOW 16 MEG = 200
As the NetWare v4.0 INSTALL utility resides on the CD-ROM and is
executed so that no STARTUP.NCF file will be called, it is impossible to setup the above
SET parameter at install time. If the Adaptec or BusLogic drivers are loaded with >16MB
support enabled without the above SET parameter being set, then NetWare will generate a
number of memory allocation errors during the installation process.
The most convenient way to solve this problem is to first install
NetWare v4.0 via CD-ROM by loading the relevant driver WITHOUT the >16MB support. Then,
when the install process is completed, the STARTUP.NCF file created on the DOS partition
can be modified to enable the >16MB support by adding the SET RESERVED BUFFERS command
(see above) BEFORE the disk driver is loaded, and then adding an extra parameter to the
line where the disk driver is loaded, as below.
For an Adaptec AHA1640 system, add the switch 'ABOVE16=y'
i.e. LOAD AHA1640 slot=7 ABOVE16=Y
For a BusLogic BT-646S system, add the switch 'Over16Meg'
i.e. LOAD BT40 port=340 OVER16MEG
Note: with either driver, other switches may also be
relevant and should be included where necessary.
