Pre-Installed Windows 95 Systems

As supplied by Apricot, a system with Windows 95 should, when first booted, display the Windows 95 ‘Welcome’ screen after a short delay. From this screen, Windows 95 will then begin the ‘first-time setup’ routine, so that the user can set Windows 95 up with their own details.

If at the ‘Welcome’ screen the system is reset, powered down, or the Cancel button is pressed, then Windows 95 assumes that the first-time setup routine was not completed successfully, or that there was some other problem in the Windows 95 installation. Consequently, when the system is next rebooted, a ‘Warning’ screen will be displayed stating that either the first-time setup was not completed or there was a problem/error. If at this stage the Continue button is pressed, the original ‘Welcome’ screen will be displayed and all will continue correctly.

Should it be necessary to test-boot a pre-installed Windows 95 system prior to it being delivered to the customer, there is a way to prevent the customer from seeing the ‘Warning’ screen.

Windows 95 creates a log file of the first-time setup progress, and so to reset the installation to how it would be before booting, simply boot the system off a DOS floppy disk, and then delete the log file, which is called C:\OEMLOG.TXT.
