APC PowerChute Plus for SCO UNIX |
These notes refer to Version 4.2.1 of PowerChute Plus for SCO UNIX only.
The installation procedure is unusual in that the product does not use custom (ADM) to
install, and is outlined below:
- With UNIX in multi-user mode log in as the Super User:
root
- Insert the Install Disk and copy the INSTALL script into a
temporary directory:
cd /tmp
tar xvf /dev/install INSTALL
- Run the INSTALL script:
./INSTALL
- When installation is complete remove the INSTALL script:
rm INSTALL
The output of the INSTALL script for a typical installation is as
follows:

Select the media type from which you will install: [?] 2
Enter name of raw floppy device [?] /dev/rdsk/f0q18dt
Is /dev/rdsk/f0q18dt correct? [y/n,q] y
It is important to use a raw device such as /dev/rdsk/f0q18dt
or /dev/rfd0135ds18 since the archive is split across two volumes. Using
a block device will result in a read error at the end of the first volume.
Would you like to see an overview of the Installation? [y/n,q] n
Entering y at this point will give you a brief
description of the installation procedure and then continue the installation as below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The User Interface module of this product is capable of monitoring any system
on your network running the Daemon module of PowerChute Plus for Unix. For
this reason, you may feel it is only appropriate to install the entire
distribution on certain systems.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: In order to perform any sort of UPS monitoring, including shutdown due
to power failure, you must install at least the Daemon module of the product!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- User Interface Module Only
- Daemon Module Required for UPS Monitoring Only
- Both the User Interface and Daemon Modules
Which Parts of PowerChute Plus for Unix do you wish to install? [?] 3
Since the SCO release does not support remote UPS monitoring even with
TCP/IP installed, option 3 is the preferred option.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you will be using the Motif version of the User Interface on a monochrome
monitor, using the Monochrome Coloring scheme is recommended.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Use Default Color scheme
- Use Monochrome Color scheme
Which color scheme do you wish to use [1]? 1
- Matrix line of UPS

- BackUps line of UPS
Which APC Hardware will PowerChute Plus for Unix be running with [?] 2
The UPS hardware supplied by Apricot is a SmartUps (type 2
above).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The MeasureUps is a device which installs between the UPS and the serial port
on your computer. It is designed to perform environmental monitoring in
conjuction with PowerChute Plus for Unix
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you currently have a MeasureUps attached to the UPS? [y/n,q] n

Which serial device will be dedicated to PowerChute Plus for Unix [?] 1
The UPS would normally be connected to the first on-board serial port
(/dev/tty1a - option 1 above). You should check that both the modem and
non modem devices for the port you select are disabled (i.e. disable tty1a
and disable tty1A at the end of the installation if you have not already
done so).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You should have the black cable, #940-0024B attached to /dev/tty1a Please
verify.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Though it is possible to install PowerChute Plus for Unix in a directory other
than the provided default, it is reccomended only under special circumstances.
Please consult the documentation.

PowerChute Plus for Unix Installation complete. You will need to reboot in
order to start the application
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: For every machine on which you run the UPS monitoring daemon, you MUST
create a "pwrchute" user account. Otherwise, the User Interface will show you
a list of machines which are running the UPS monitoring daemon but you will be
unable to monitor or configure them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The installation should now be complete, remove "Program Disk
2" from your floppy disk drive and reboot in order to activate the UPS monitor.
Once the system has rebooted the state of the UPS can be check via the
PowerChute Plus User Interface:
cd /usr/lib/powerchute
./powerchute
