Installing SCO OpenServer 5.0 on XEN-PC/PCLS/PCM with ATAPI CD-ROM

Releases of SCO Unix prior to OpenServer 5.0 have only supported SCSI CD-ROM drives. However, ATAPI CD-ROMs that connect to an IDE interface are now supported by OpenServer 5.0.

The driver for the ATAPI CD-ROM is supplied as a BTLD floppy and is included in the SCO packaging.

The CD-ROM for the XEN-PC/PCLS/PCM, apart from the A1 DX/2-50, is now an ATAPI type. At the current time such models are RC, RD, RE, RF, RG, and RH product codes.

Installation from an ATAPI CD-ROM is discussed in the OpenServer 5.0 Release Notes booklet, but the boot string given below will be required to install the product. To install, carry out the following:

  1. Ensure that the CD-ROM is connected to the secondary IDE interface and is strapped as master.

  2. Boot the machine from the SCO OpenServer Boot Disk.

  3. At the Boot: prompt enter the following:

    defbootstr ahslink=ATAPI Sdsk=wd(0,0,0,0)

  4. When requested whether or not to replace the wd driver, select r to replace.

  5. A screen to identify the installation media will be displayed. Select SCSI CD-ROM.

  6. Select wd as the SCSI host adapter type.

  7. Select 1 as the host adapter number.

  8. Select 0 as the SCSI ID.

The ATAPI BTLD replaces the wd driver normally used for IDE hard disks with a new version that supports ATAPI CD-ROMs. With this driver, hard disks and ATAPI CD-ROMs appear as SCSI devices.

Once OpenServer 5.0 is installed the SCO OpenServer Release Supplement should be installed. This is the same floppy as above - it includes the ATAPI BTLD. Refer to chapter 4 of the OpenServer Handbook for instructions on applying a software patch with the Software Manager.
