CMOS Memory Erasing
CMOS memory contains details of the system configuration, keyboard
password, and security configuration (where fitted). Periodically it may be necessary to
erase this memory in order to remove a forgotten password or to clear an incorrect change
to the system configuration. The memory is maintained when the system is powered-down by a
rechargeable battery located on or by the system motherboard. In order to erase CMOS the
battery needs to be disconnected and the memory left to drain for approximately 30
minutes.
Before removing the cover of any system unit for any reason, including
battery disconnection and installation of expansion options, full Electrostatic Discharge
Precautions must be observed. See IPB 4109.
On systems that have security hardware installed, ensure the SYSTEM
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (SIN) is available. This applies whether security has been enabled
or not.
To disconnect the battery on Apricot products observe the following :-
LANstation |
Remove the jumper located to the side of the blue battery mounted on
the motherboard. |
XEN-S |
Battery disconnection in the field is not possible on this model. |
XEN-LS |
Remove the jumper located to the side of the blue battery mounted at
the front of the motherboard. |
Qi 486 |
Disconnect the ribbon cable leading from the LED board at the front of
the system. |
Qi 300/600/900 |
Disconnect the lead running from the battery mounted under the internal
speaker. |
VX FT |
Disconnect the lead running from the battery mounted on the expansion
card holder. |
FTs |
Disconnect the 20 way ribbon cable running from the power distribution
board to the system motherboard. |
FTe |
Disconnect the ribbon cable running from the front panel to the
motherboard. |
Under no circumstances are the motherboard terminals to be shorted
together or to ground in order to speed the draining progress. Warranty will be void on
any system motherboard found to have been damaged by discharging CMOS in this manner. |
