Changing the Video settings within Windows 95

All Apricot PC machines currently shipping have a factory default setting of Standard Monitor Type (in manufacturers settings) and a model setting of Standard VGA 640x480.

A) Run CLMODE using the following steps.

  1. Using shut down option in Windows 95 choose the "Restart into MS-DOS mode" option.

  2. At the prompt, type the following:

    C: {RETURN}
    CD C:\VGAUTIL {RETURN}

  3. Then type CLMODE and a CL-GD5434 Screen refresh Setup menu will appear.

  4. Choose the "Other Brand Options" in both the Monitor Brand and Monitor Options and set the refresh rates to the following:

    640x480 to 60Hz.
    800x600 to 56Hz.
    1024x768 to 87Hz Interlaced.
    1280x1024 to 87Hz Interlaced.

  5. Left click the mouse on "Exit" and left click on "YES" which will save the settings.

  6. Reboot the machine using Ctrl / Alt / Del back into Windows 95.

B) To change the video settings the following must be carried out.

  1. Click on right mouse button in the main screen area to call up the menu and then left click on the properties option.

  2. Left click on "Settings" option then left click on the "Change Display type" option.

  3. Do not change the adapter type setting but left click on change monitor type. Left click on Show All Devices which will give a list of options.

  4. Click on the model resolution that is required and click on the OK option. The screen will then show the new option. Left click on close and left click on apply.

  5. A prompt will appear so left click mouse on OK. The machine will resize and again prompt you to save the setting so left click again on OK.

  6. If the Super VGA 1024x768 Option is chosen and set as per the steps above. You can jump between 3 settings using this option(640x480, 800x600 & 1024x768). However, if a problem occurs setting the video then Windows 95 will revert back to the default setting providing the mouse is not moved for 15 seconds.

  7. Any major problems causing the Windows 95 to hang on reboot after video changes, can be fixed by rebooting the machine using ctrl / alt / del and pressing F8, when the starting windows 95 script appears, to change to a boot menu. Choose 3 which is a safe mode boot and reconfigure back to the original settings.
