BIOS limitations with Diamond based products

There are known limitations with versions 5.03 and 5.04 of the Diamond BIOS, these are:

  1. Only one password will function correctly if both are set.

  2. In standby mode (manual switch on front of machine) the Windows 95 clock will slow down and therefore show incorrect time when the system is fully powered.

  3. With online machines in standby mode (manual switch on front of machine) the modem will not wake up the machine to receive incoming calls.

These problems have been rectified by BIOS release 5.06. The BIOS ROM on a Diamond based product is a Flash device and can be reprogrammed in situ.

The Flash program and the binary file are available on area 43 on Apricot Insight BBS. The files are JFLASH.ZIP (requires unzipping) & D6_5434.BIN (the BIOS binary file for Diamond product with the Cirrus Logic GD5434 video Chipset).

Once these files have been downloaded they should be copied to a bootable floppy (not loading any TSR's), and the machine booted from this floppy. The command line to program the BIOS is: JFLASH -F:D6_5434.BIN make sure the BIOS write protect jumper is set to enable (PL6 jumpers 1&2).

If running Windows 95, after flash updating the BIOS Windows 95 will automatically detect the parallel port as an ECP (Extended Capability Port).

N.B. for Dixon Stores Group

A copy of an "End user" disk is available from the Apricot Insight BBS Area 43 file name PCW506.EXE this is a self extracting archive file to create a "hands off" disk with PC Plus details (Other dealer can use this disk if they amend the details in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file).
