Installation of Windows 95 Causing System Hang on XEN-PC (RC/RD)

It has been found that when installing Windows 95 on a XEN-PC, model number RC/RD (P2 Motherboard), your computer may stop responding (hang) when Windows 95 tries to restart the computer the first time. This is because the software looks at the BIOS and sees that it is capable of Advanced Power Management. It then makes assumptions based on this and assumes that the computer is a battery powered notebook. Disabling power management in the BIOS does not stop this error. To correct the fault the following steps must be taken.

  1. Start Windows 95 in Safe mode. This is done by pressing F8 when the message "Starting Windows 95....." appears on the screen and selecting Safe Mode from the Menu.

  2. When the system has started (this may take a few minutes), use the right mouse button to click My Computer, and then click Properties on the menu that appears.

  3. Click the Device Manager tab.

  4. Double-click the System Devices branch to expand it, and then double-click Advanced Power Management Support.

  5. On the Settings tab, click the Enable Power Management Support check box to clear it.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the System.ini file in the Windows folder. Disable the following line in the [386Enh] section of the file by placing a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line:

    device=*vpowerd

  8. Save and then close the System.ini file, and then restart your computer.

The system should then continue with the installation of Windows 95.
