Making COM 2 available on Trent based MS540 & MS660 (MM & MF)

Introduction

All MS540’s & MS660’s are currently built with Communications Port COM 2 being used by the IR receiver board. This means that if an end-user plugs a device into the COM 2 port at the rear of the machine, it will not work.

To make COM 2 available for use, use the following procedure:-

(1) Shut-Down and switch off the machine.
(2) Remove the top cover (side panel on the MS660).
(3) Disconnect the IR receiver board from the motherboard. This is done by locating and unplugging the ribbon cable from PL20 on the motherboard (see Diagram 1). On the MS540, you must unscrew and move the floppy drive out of the way to safely do this.

(4) Fit 3 jumpers (PN=11408021) onto PL20, in the locations shown on Diagram 2 (none completion of this step will result in loss of sound). The jumpers can be obtained FOC by contacting Retail Support on 0121-717-7171.
(5) Replace top cover (side panel on MS660). The machine is now ready for use.

Completing this procedure will have the following effects on the computer:-

(i) Communications Port COM 2 will be free to use.
(ii) The Remote Controller will not function.
(iii) When messages are received, the message LED will not light up.

Note:- If you wish to run the Recovery Kit after completing this procedure, you MUST reconnect the ribbon cable to PL20.
