VX-Net - AEMM.SYS and AMLOAD.EXE
Recent versions of VX-Net (including the current release, 3.14) give the
option to define a workstation as using the 286 expanded memory driver AEMM.SYS. For
historical reasons, NETGEN will append /p:,4 /r to the DEVICE=AEMM.SYS line in the
CONFIG.SYS file that is produced for the workstation, giving :-
DEVICE=AEMM.SYS /p:,4 /r
Version 4.02 of AEMM.SYS (as found on recent DOS System Disks, and in
VX-Net 3.14) does not need these switches, and so they should be edited out, leaving
just:-
DEVICE=AEMM.SYS
in CONFIG.SYS.
Also, we would advise that version 4.02.04 (beta) of AMLOAD.EXE be used,
as this version will detect that AEMM.SYS is loaded and will not over-write the memory
used by AEMM.SYS, unlike earlier versions.
The use of AEMM.SYS and AMLOAD.EXE together will result in the loss of
64K of memory to AMLOAD, as AEMM.SYS sets up a 64K page frame in the memory that AMLOAD
would otherwise have used. This will mean that on a XEN-S, for example, AMLOAD will be
restricted to 128K of memory, as opposed to the 192K it would otherwise have had
available. This may have implications on applications being loaded, as there will be less
above memory to load the network stack into, causing more network software to be placed
into conventional memory, and therefore reducing the amount of conventional memory
available after logging on.
AEMM.SYS Version 4.02 is available on the Apricot Technical Support
Bulletin Board in File Area 42, and AMLOAD.EXE Version 4.02.04 (beta) is available from
the BBS in File Area 38.
