Sytos and Novell NetWare 386

We have had a number of instances recently where users with Wangtek tape drives have attempted to use Sytos to back up a volume on a NetWare 386 server without success.

After discussion with Sytron, we have found the following;-

The NETWORK option in STCONFIG should be set to NO, and the TREES option should be set to YES.

When running the backup in Sytos, you should use the SET SELECT INCLUDE command to specify the network drive and path, rather than use SET DISK command. If SET DISK is used, Sytos will attempt to read the FAT of the network drive, and will fail. You should also use the BACKUP FILE option rather than BACKUP DISK, as BACKUP DISK will again attempt to read and buffer the FAT of the network disk.

As an example, if you wanted to back up all the files on drive H:, you would use SET SELECT INCLUDE H:\*.*, and then BACKUP FILE SELECTED.

We should also point out that this procedure will NOT back up the NetWare 386 Bindary files. These should be backed up separately.

Sytos PLUS does work correctly with NetWare 386 (including the backup of Bindary files), and so we would recommend that, where possible, versions of Sytos are upgraded to Sytos Plus if the ability to make a FULL backup of a NetWare 386 server is important.
