Sytos Plus For OS/2 And The Archive DAT Drive

Recently a number of sites have reported a problem with Sytos Plus for OS/2 with an Archive DAT drive whereby you cannot backup twice. It would seem that the driver within Sytos Plus does not send an end of backup message to the DAT drive to tell it the backup has finished. Consequently the tape drive will still think it is backing up, so when another backup is requested the Sytos Plus will report the error:

ERROR 55 Backup device does not recognize the Sytos Plus command

Previously, the only way to clear this error was to reboot the server, which in turn would reset the DAT drive.

After some investigation within the Technical Support Group, it was found that all DAT drives shipped by Apricot are factory set for SCSI 2. This setting does not make any difference with UNIX or Sytos Plus for DOS as SCSI 2 is only a superset of SCSI 1. However it would appear that Sytos Plus for OS/2 does not like the DAT drive being set to SCSI 2. The solution is therefore to set the DAT drive to emulate SCSI 1.

To set the DAT drive to SCSI 1, switch 4 on the dip switch bank should be set to OFF. ( The dip switch bank is located toward the rear of the DAT drive when viewed from above.)
