Novell NetWare 3.11 Operating System Patches

Novell have just released version 6 of the operating system patch kit for NetWare 3.11.

311PT6.ZIP contains 33 patches for Novell NetWare 3.11. Version 6 of the kit supersedes all previous releases of the 3.11 OS patches distributed by Novell (under the names 311PT1.ZIP, 311PT2.ZIP, 311PT3.ZIP, 311PT4.ZIP and 311PT5.ZIP).

Version 6 of the patch kit includes all the patches found in previous releases, and one new patch.

The new patch is as follows (text taken from the release document 311PT6.DOC):-

GETRFIX.NLM
1311 04-22-92 3:38p
This patch fixes an abend caused by a driver requesting a valid linked request, which has been changed by another process. A zero is now returned to the calling process instead of abending the server.

Also, the patch ELRDFIX.NLM has been REMOVED from the patch kit. This is because of 'possible data corruption with this patch loaded in conjunction with running VREPAIR'. All servers running this patch should therefore have the patch unloaded.

As with previous versions of the patch kit, Novell do not require that any of the patches in the archive be loaded UNLESS problems are experienced, in which case the appropriate patch to overcome the problem encountered should be loaded. There is a full readme document in the archive that explains what all the patches are and what they fix. In particular, any patches to fix ABEND or disk FAT errors should be checked before reporting problems to Technical Support.

Version 6 of the NetWare 3.11 Operating System patch kit is available as a single archive, 311PT6.ZIP (51608 bytes), and can be obtained from Authorised Novell Distributors, from the Novell NetWire service, or from the Apricot Technical Support Bulletin Board System (in file area 37).

Novell have also released a direct patch for the NetWare 3.11 SERVER.EXE 'loader'. The loader is a section of the operating system that contains hardware dependent code. It is this piece of code that is responsible for much of the initialization that occurs when NetWare 386 is first executed. The patch fixes a number of problems that have been seen on some PS/2 machines, along with a few other hardware specific issues. All the fixes are fully documented in the archive containing the patch.

The SERVER.EXE loader patch, XLOAD.ZIP can be found in file area 37 of the Apricot Technical Support Bulletin Board System, and is also available from Authorised Novell Distributors or from the Novell NetWire service. The file is 33,340 bytes long.

Please note that the server MUST be closed down to apply this patch.
