Installing NetWare 3.12 from CD-ROM using a
single Adaptec 1640 SCSI Controller
Due to a problem with Adaptec's DOS and NetWare drivers, normal
installation of NetWare 3.12 from CD-ROM is not supported. However listed below is a
"WORK AROUND" to the problem.
To install NetWare the CD-ROM drive must be able to be accessed as a DOS
drive.
Listed below are recommend settings that enable the CD-ROM to be
accessed as a DOS device.
CONFIG.SYS
DEVICE=ASPI4DOS.SYS /D /i
DEVICE=ASPICD.SYS /D:ROM
AUTOEXEC.BAT
C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:ROM /L:D /M:10 /V /E
The CD-ROM can now be accessed as drive D.
Invoke INSTALL.BAT from the CD-ROM (D:\NETWARE.312\ENGLISH).
Continue with the install program until SERVER.EXE activates. At this
stage, down the server and exit to DOS.
Remove all CD-ROM related drivers from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT (see
above), reboot the machine and activate SERVER.EXE.
Complete the installation steps as normal until NetWare prompts to copy
SYSTEM and PUBLIC files.
Return to the NetWare SYSTEM CONSOLE (Ctrl Esc) and enter the commands
below:-
LOAD C:ASPICD
LOAD C:CDROM
CD MOUNT NETWARE_312
The CD-ROM will mount as a NetWare Volume. This task takes approximately
4 minutes.
Return to the NetWare INSTALL SCREEN (Ctrl Esc).
When NetWare prompts to copy SYSTEM and PUBLIC files press
"F6"
Specify the path to read files as: NETWARE_312:\NETWARE.312\ENGLISH
NetWare will now copy all the SYSTEM and PUBLIC files correctly.
Complete any other installation steps as normal.
