Windows Hangs When Rebooting After
Configuration Change
We have had reports on a number of different hardware configurations
whereby Windows will hang when rebooting itself after making a system change (such as
changing the network configuration or swap-file details). We have investigated the
problem, and have found that this problem affects a small number of systems from a number
of different vendors.
At the point that the system hangs, the changed data has already been
saved, and so it is safe to switch the system off and back on again (i.e. cold-boot the
system), but to prevent the hang, the following should be carried out.
Edit SYSTEM.INI, and add the following line to the [386Enh] section.
KybdReboot=Off
With this line added, when Windows would have rebooted the system, it
will instead shut down, exit to DOS, and then display the following message on the screen
(after clearing it);
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del again to reboot your machine
Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del at this stage will reset the system and Windows
will re-start with the configuration changes made.
This command switch is documented in the Windows for Workgroups Resource
Kit on page 6-42, or in the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit page 204.
