Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Conner Backup Exec for NetWare

A problem has been found when installing the Conner Backup Exec for NetWare Windows Client software onto a system configured with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 whereby the Client software would not see all the available server and workstation backup agents on the network.

We have investigated the problem, and with the help of Arcada Software (the authors of Conner Backup Exec) have found a work-around. Arcada themselves say that the problem is caused by an incompatibility between the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 drivers and the Novell IPX/SPX Workgroup transport.

The fix can be implemented in two ways (both achieve the same objective).

1) Via the Network Setup application in the Network Program Group

  • Run the Network Setup application
  • Click on the Drivers button
  • Highlight IPX/SPX Compatible Transport (may be with NetBIOS) and click on the Remove button.
  • Ensure that the Microsoft NetBEUI protocol is set to default by highlighting Microsoft NetBEUI and clicking on the Set As Default Protocol button
  • Close the Drivers screen, then click on the OK button.
  • If necessary, edit NET.CFG and PROTOCOL.INI, replacing all occurrences of XXXX with the name of the ODI LAN driver (e.g. 82596ODI, 82592ODI, PCNTNW, or 3C5X9)
  • 2) Manually editing PROTOCOL.INI (take a backup first!)

      Edit PROTOCOL.INI and remove the following lines;

      • transport=ms$nwlinknb,NWLINK
        lana1=ms$odimac,1,ms$nwlinknb
        or
        transport=ms$nwlink,NWLINK
        lana1=ms$odimac,1,ms$nwlink

      This should leave the lines;

      transport=ms$netbeui,NETBEUI
      lana0=ms$odimac,1,ms$netbeui

      Note that odimac may be replaced by another LAN card name, such as pcntn3 or elnk3.
