AMD PCNET Drivers and Windows for Workgroups

If you receive the following error when starting Windows for Workgroups
after making any change to network settings or configuring ODI support for the first time,
then you are advised to follow the procedure below to correct it. The error is:
The following error occurred while loading protocol number 0.
Error 58: The network has responded incorrectly. You may need to reconfigure the protocol
using Network Setup. If your computer is a portable, make sure it is connected to its
docking station.
Start Windows without support for networks by typing WIN /N.
Run Network Setup from the Network group, select the Networks icon, and
choose No Windows support for networks. Continue until prompted to re-start Windows, but
exit to DOS in the normal way.
Remove all Windows and/or network drivers from CONFIG.SYS with the
exception of IFSHLP.SYS, which should be the last line. Remove any network related lines
from AUTOEXEC.BAT with the exception of the following:
C:\NWCLIENT\LSL
C:\NWCLIENT\PCNTNW
C:\NWCLIENT\IPXODI
C:\NWCLIENT\NETX (or VLM)
(If these files are not in NWCLIENT directory substitute the correct
Directory path)
Delete both NET.CFG and PROTOCOL.INI and reboot the system. An error
message will state that a NET.CFG was not found, and you may not be able to connect to
your network at this stage.
Load Windows. Run Network Setup from the Network window, select the
Networks icon, and choose Install Microsoft Windows Network and OTHER network. Scroll
through the list, choose Novell Netware Workstation Shell 3.x (or Novell Netware
Workstation Shell 4.0 and above if using VLM) and continue.
Next, select Sharing... to choose sharing options for files and printers
as required and continue.
Select Drivers... and Add Adapter. Select Unlisted or Updated Network
Adaptor and insert the AMD PCNET drivers disk in Drive A. Select the Advanced Micro
Devices PCNET Family. then Continue. Close the Drivers Window and continue to install as
normal. When the installation is finished do not restart the computer but continue. Edit
PROTOCOL.INI and add the following highlighted in Bold letters

Save this and then edit your NET.CFG file
It should have the following entries
Link Driver PCNTNW
Frame Ethernet_802.3
Frame Ethernet_802.2
Frame Ethernet_II
Frame Ethernet_SNAP
Protocol IPX 0 Ethernet_802.3
Save this file and reboot.
