AMD PCNET Drivers and Windows for Workgroups v3.11

If you receive the following error when starting Windows for Workgroups after making any change to network settings or configuring ODI support for the first time, then you are advised to follow the procedure below to correct it. The error is:

The following error occurred while loading protocol number 0.
Error 58: The network has responded incorrectly. You may need to reconfigure the protocol using Network Setup. If your computer is a portable, make sure it is connected to its docking station.

Start Windows without support for networks by typing WIN /N.

Run Network Setup from the Network group, select the Networks icon, and choose No Windows support for networks. Continue until prompted to re-start Windows, but exit to DOS in the normal way.

Remove all Windows and/or network drivers from CONFIG.SYS with the exception of IFSHLP.SYS, which should be the last line. Remove any network related lines from AUTOEXEC.BAT with the exception of the following:

C:\NWCLIENT\LSL
C:\NWCLIENT\PCNTNW
C:\NWCLIENT\IPXODI
C:\NWCLIENT\NETX (or VLM)

(If these files are not in NWCLIENT directory substitute the correct Directory path)

Delete both NET.CFG and PROTOCOL.INI and reboot the system. An error message will state that a NET.CFG was not found, and you may not be able to connect to your network at this stage.

Load Windows. Run Network Setup from the Network window, select the Networks icon, and choose Install Microsoft Windows Network and OTHER network. Scroll through the list, choose Novell Netware Workstation Shell 3.x (or Novell Netware Workstation Shell 4.0 and above if using VLM) and continue.

Next, select Sharing... to choose sharing options for files and printers as required and continue.

Select Drivers... and Add Adapter. Select Unlisted or Updated Network Adaptor and insert the AMD PCNET drivers disk in Drive A. Select the Advanced Micro Devices PCNET Family. then Continue. Close the Drivers Window and continue to install as normal. When the installation is finished do not restart the computer but continue. Edit PROTOCOL.INI and add the following highlighted in Bold letters

[Link Driver PCNTNW]
data=Frame Ethernet_802.3
data=Frame Ethernet_802.2
data=Frame Ethernet_SNAP
data=Frame Ethernet_II
data=Link Driver PCNTNW

[NWLINK]
Bindings=PCNTNW

[NETBEUI]
LANABASE=0

Save this and then edit your NET.CFG file
It should have the following entries

Link Driver PCNTNW

Frame Ethernet_802.3
Frame Ethernet_802.2
Frame Ethernet_II
Frame Ethernet_SNAP
Protocol IPX 0 Ethernet_802.3

Save this file and reboot.
