IBM 2Gb Starfire Drives (Pt No. 15321431) in FT//ex Machines

It has been found that in a small number of cases the above drives can suffer from a stiction problem. If drives that have been powered on for more than thirty days are then powered down then it is possible that on power up the drives may not start. If the drives do start then they will work correctly.

Drives that are affected or have the potential to be a problem can be identified by the following procedure. Please note that this is only relevant to drives attached to Adaptec SCSI adapters (if the drives are connected to the DPT RAID Controller then they can be temporarily connected to the onboard Adaptec controller).

  1. Create a DOS boot Disk.
  2. Copy the ASPI driver (ASPI8DOS.SYS) to the disk.
  3. Create a CONFIG.SYS with the following line
    DEVICE=A:\ASPI8DOS.SYS /Z /D
  4. Save the file and use the disk to boot the machine.

When the ASPI driver loads then as it identifies each drive then at the end of the drive description it displays the drive firmware revision. This should be 4141. If it does not display the correct BIOS version then contact Apricot Technical Services for advice.
