The Specialix Serial I/O Card for MCA Systems

The procedure for installing a Specialix card on an Apricot MCA machine (Qi, VX1000M and VX/FT) is as follows:-

  1. Installing the Hardware

Install the Specialix Controller card and boot the system from the Apricot Reference disk. 'Error 166' will be reported - press 'Enter' to continue and then 'Esc'. Select 'Install' to copy the ADF file from the disk supplied with the tape unit. Now run 'Autoconfigure' - this will ensure the device is 'enabled'.

If a TS150/5 tape unit is also installed, it is necessary to select the 'Change' option to overcome an interrupt clash. Leave the Specialix memory address on segment C000, but change the interrupt level from 5 to 9. Make sure to press 'F10' to save settings.

  2. Installing the Driver

Run the Xenix command - 'custom' and select the option to 'Add a supported Package', with the Specialix installation disk loaded. Select 'install' and then follow the prompts. The installation allows you to set up terminal types and configurations, or alternatively, you can wait until the system is rebooted and edit the relevant configuration files in the normal way.

When configuration is complete, the system will automatically reboot. It is a good idea to enter System Maintenance Mode at this point and run 'fsck', since the 2.02A release of the driver leaves an unreferenced inode in the system. Once 'fsck' has completed, shut the system down and then reboot it to bring it up Multiuser.

  3. General Notes

The Specialix card has the same type of connector as the TS150/5 tape controller card - if both cards are installed in your system, be careful not to mismatch the devices and cards. Also remember to change the Specialix interrupt in this case (refer to item '1' above).
