SCO OpenServer 5.0 on FT//ex1000 and Shogun with IBM 1Gb “Pegasus” drive

This IPB supersedes IPB 3193, which has been withdrawn. It also replaces IPB 3209 dated 12 January 1996 which should be destroyed.

Throughout this IPB an italic font indicates SCO terminology and a courier font indicates screen output, a file name, command, or menu item name

This IPB relates to a problem seen when installing SCO OpenServer 5.0 on the FT//ex 1000 (EISA/PCI M5 motherboard) when using the 1Gb “Pegasus” drive The drive is identified by the Adaptec AIC 7870 BIOS as IBM DPES-31080 on the FT//ex and IBM DPEA-31080 on the Shogun. The symptom is similar to that detailed in IPB 3208, namely that the operating system installs but upon re-booting after the installation is completed a panic srmountfun will be seen as the kernel boots.

To overcome this problem a BTLD floppy has been produced by SCO as part of the OpenServer 5 Advanced Hardware Supplement rel 5.1 for installing the system only. This floppy should only be used to install OpenServer 5, do not attempt to update the alad driver of a running system by using the installpkg command with this floppy - it will fail. A running system that has previously been patched with the beta alad/Driver.o (old method to fix), or booted from the unix.install kernel should be updated by installing the AHS 5.1 supplement from the Software Manager.

The BTLD floppy can be obtained from Apricot Insight BBS in area 39 or rel 10 of the Insight CD as AHS51BTL.Z. The AHS 5.1 files for installation with the Software Manager are in the same locations as AHS51V1, AHS51V2, AHS51V3, AHS51V4, and AHS51V4. Insight BBS files are also available at our ftp and Web sites on the Internet (ftp.apricot.co.uk and www.apricot.co.uk).

Creating BTLD floppy and installing

Create the floppy by copying the file to a Unix system. Ensure that the file ends in an upper-case Z which denotes Unix compress format. Then use commands such as these to copy the file to a formatted floppy:

#uncompress ahs51btl.Z
#dd if=ahs51btl of=/dev/rfd0135ds18 bs=18k

To install OpenServer 5 boot up with the SCO Boot Floppy and at the Boot: prompt enter:

defbootstr ahslink=alad

Installing AHS 5.1 with Software Manager

Either copy the five floppy images to floppies or copy them to a directory on the system. The latter method is much faster, especially if using the Insight CD-ROM as the CD can be mounted and the files simply copied off. If the latter method is used then the files must be renamed as VOL.000.000, VOL.001.000, VOL.002.000, VOL.003.000, and VOL.004.000 which is normal for installation of software or patches from Media Images with the Software Manger.

From single user mode do the following commands:

  1. #scoadmin soft

  2. Select Software

  3. Select Install New

  4. Select From <hostname> where <hostname> is the system name.

  5. Select the Media Device as Floppy Disk Drive 0 or Media Images as appropriate. For Media Images you will be asked for the path of the directory containing the VOL.00n.000 files.
