New XEN-S Motherboard (Venus II)

The Motherboard for the XEN-S range is being updated, and several very important points for both Technical and Sales staff come out of this change: ALL your personnel should be copied on this document.

  1. Identifying Machines With the New Motherboard.

The Model Number on the base of the machine should be as per the table below:

XEN-S PC386 44004 XEN-S 200 43996
XEN-S PC286 45554 XEN-S 210 43998
XEN-S 250 44009 XEN-S 110 43962
  1. Hard Disk Drives

The new Motherboard only supports 1 hard disk drive.

  2. Switches

Many of the switches have been relocated (see attached diagram), the sticker on top of the power supply reflects the new positions.

Disabling on-board video is now simplified to Switch 8 on block SW10 only.

Link 5 is a connection to the battery just in case you need to drain the CMOS.

SW5 which controls the Colour or Mono setting for the on-board video will always be set to Colour. This switch does NOT need altering if you put a paper-white monitor on the system. The switch is for unknown software that may look at this register for it's settings.

  3. Networking

Thick and thin Ethernet plugs will be fitted on all machines. For the PC range that does not have on-board Ethernet, the following components; IC75,IC98, IC97, IC88 and TX1; will be removed.

Venus II will be supplied with 1.2.16 ROM BIOS, these are NOT the same ROMs as the previous XEN-S boards. There will now be 4 sets of ROMs for the XEN-S range,

    (1) XEN-S (Venus I)
    (2) XEN-S (Venus I) Novell Remote Boot
    (3) XEN-S (Venus II)
    (4) XEN-S (Venus II) Novell Remote Boot.*
    * All but (4) are currently available.
  4. Memory Expansion

Support for the 1, 2 and 4MB memory modules will continue as before.

  5. Documentation

The In-The-Box manuals will consist of the current manuals plus a fly-sheet explaining the differences in the manual.

The fly sheet and sticker on the Power Supply both refer to clock speed settings of 10 and 20MHz, these functions are NOT currently supported.

The 80287 and 80387SX Co-processor installation notes refer to the original XEN-S (Venus I) motherboard and are incorrect when referring to the position of the sockets. The PAL chip for the 80387SX remains in IC96 but the location is different. The location for the 80287 and the 80387SX processors are detailed on the top of the power supply.
