PAL & NTSC Video BIOS in Lightning motherboard

There is an issue related to video BIOS on the ‘Lightning’ motherboard variant that was built into a specific MS600 UK promotional model (MV87231) when replacing for a ‘like-for-like’ part number variant ‘in the field’.

This specific model variant was shipped with motherboard p/n 12455831 (M/B-LIGHTNING/C J CONS 87307) which has a PAL video BIOS installed, whereas motherboards purchased as ‘spares’ under the p/n PT12455831 have an NTSC video BIOS installed & therefore will not output the display to a standard PAL television.

The BIOS update disk that is available on the BBS will detect which type of video BIOS is on the motherboard, and update the one that is already installed. I.E. if PAL is installed, if will only update the PAL BIOS.

If you need to install the PAL video BIOS onto a Lightning motherboard, insert the latest BIOS update diskette and type the following command line at the A: DOS prompt:

AFLASH -W -V 161531SW.BIN

If future updates of the bios are required, then option 2 of the update disk should be used as this will only update the main BIOS. If recovery is performed, then the original NTSC video bios will be installed and the above command will need to be used again the following boot.

Another option for replacement of these boards ‘in the field’ is to replace with the higher specification (includes WAV facility) PAL BIOS variant p/n PT12455631 (M/B-LIGHTNING/C CONS 87307).
