Archive 1.2GB DDS Unit
The behaviour of this unit under SCO Xenix and SCO Unix versions varies
in the loading/unloading of cartridges. Under SCO Xenix the cartridge is unloaded on
completion of a backup or restore. Under SCO Unix the cartridge remains in the unit and
available for use at all times until the unit is physically asked to eject the cartridge.
Under the latest SCO Unix 3.2 version 2 the cartridge will by default be ejected after a
backup has been run.
To ensure the cartridge is not ejected a new device can be created under
SCO Unix 3.2 version 2. The instructions are supplied with the Unix software but are
summarised here.
If your DDS unit is addressed as /dev/rct0 with for example a major
number of 46 and minor number of 0, then 4 should be added to the minor number to create a
"no unload" device using the command.
/etc/mknod /dev/nurct0 c 46 4
This device should then be used for backups, especially where an
unattended backup and verify is performed. The files /etc/default/tar and
/usr/lib/sysadmin/schedule will need altering to reflect this change.
If the DDS unit is your second tape unit then it will be addressed as
/dev/rStpl, to make a "No unload" device simply create /dev/nurStpl using the
major number of /dev/rStpl as a basis.
