Problems installing SCO OpenServer 5.0 over
Network
We have found certain problems when doing a network installation of
OpenServer 5.0.
An installation on a XEN-PCM with a Quantum ProDrive LT 730 AT drive
(PN. 15321531), resulted in a message Cant read bad block list when doing an
interactive fdisk/divvy installation. (Interactive fdisk/divvy installation is outlined in
IPB 3198). The solution for this involves turning off the
Extended CHS option within the system BIOS setup, and changing the number of
cylinders from 1024 to 1416 when prompted to view the disk parameters during the
installation. Similar changes to the disk parameters, have been previously referred to in IPB 3189 and IPB 3181.
A boot floppy has to be created for the machine to be installed over a
network, and this is done with the netisl utilty and is fully covered in the SCO
OpenServer Networking Guide. The netisl utility only supports a limited number of network
interface cards (nic's). If the machine being installed does not have one of these,
network installation cannot be used.
Certain drivers and patches will still need to be installed, in order
for the new installation to function correctly. Examples are:
- The OpenServer 5.0 Maintenance Release Supplement, referred to in IPB 3194, which is now Version 5.0.0d. This is available from
Apricot Insight BBS, area 39 and our Internet server (www.apricot.co.uk
and ftp.apricot.co.uk).
- Replacementalad driver (Adaptec AIC-7870 / 2940 / 3940), for machines
such as FT//ex 1000/1500 and Shogun, to cure the srmountfun panic when rebooting after
installation. Refer to IPB 3193.
