Installing Windows 3 on a Network
A number of Intermediate Product Bulletins have already been issued
regarding the installation of Windows 3 onto networks, namely IPBs 2030,
2046, 2049 and 2050.
One issue that has not been mentioned in any of the above mentioned IPBs, however, is the
location of the installed version of Windows.
If SETUP /N is run as per IPB 2049, the SETUP
program for Windows 3 will prompt for an install location. This will usually be
<drive>:\WINDOWS (for VX-Net, <drive> would be U). If however, this
destination drive and directory is changed, and a root directory is specified, Windows
will fail to run correctly. A symptom of this will be a number of "System error:
Network error on Drive ?:" messages when entering or leaving the File Manager.
We therefore advise that Windows 3 is ALWAYS installed into a
sub-directory, NEVER directly into the root of a drive.
Full network installation instructions are also to be found in the
Windows 3 User's Guide in Chapter 14 (pages 545 to 556).
