SCO Unix tape install on FT//ex with SCSI disk and tape

SCO Unix 3.2v4.2 has been installed onto a SCSI root disk from SCSI tape using the on board dual port SCSI adapter (Adaptec AIC-7770) by configuring the system as below. It is suggested that this configuration is verified before an installation is attempted.

Full configuration is achieved by changing settings in two areas, one being the ROM BIOS setup (<CNTRL><ALT><ESC> during boot up), and the other being the use of the EISA Configuration Utility floppy.

See the section at the end of this IPB for configuration changes from these that are required for a Specialix card.

ROM BIOS Setup

  1. Select "System Configuration"
  2. Select "Advanced Configuration" and set the options as follows:-

    Shadow RAM

F0000 - FFFFF (System BIOS) Enabled
    C0000 - C7FFF (Video BIOS) Enabled
    C8000 - CFFFF Enabled
    D0000 - D7FFF Enabled
    D8000 - DFFFF Enabled
    E0000 - EFFFF Enabled
    Internal Cache (CPU Cache) Enabled
    System Cache (External Cache) Enabled
    Cache Scheme Write Back
Cache Burst Read Write State 2-2-2-2
Cache Write Cycle Insert Wait Disabled
F0000 - FFFFF (System BIOS) Cacheable
    C0000 - C7FFF (Video BIOS) Cacheable

Use the <PageDown> key

Hidden Refresh Enabled
CPU-DRAM Read Cycle Insert Wait Disabled
CPU-DRAM Write Cycle Insert Wait Disabled
SCSI I/O ROM Mapping 0D800

EISA Configuration Utility floppy

  1. Boot system from the floppy
  2. Select "Configure Computer"
  3. Select "Configure Computer - advanced method"
  4. After several pauses while configuration files are loaded, select Slot 9 - Adaptec AIC-7770 SCSI Host Adapter.
  5. From within the Adaptec AIC-7770 menu entered in step 4 above, set the following options:-
    Host Adapter Interface Definitions
    Interrupt Level IRQ 11
    Bus Release Time 60 BCLKS
    Data FIFO Threshold 100%
    SCSI Channel A Configuration
    Host Adapter SCSI ID 7
    SCSI Bus Parity Check Enabled
    SCSI Selection Timeout 256 milliseconds
SCS Bus Reset at Power-on Enabled
    SCSI Channel B Configuration
    . Same as Channel A
    Primary Channel Selection A
Note: The "Primary Channel Selection" option may not appear.
  6. Select "BIOS and Device Configuration" by pressing <RETURN>.
  7. Select "BIOS Configuration" and set the options as below:-
Support Removable Disks as Fixed Disk All Devices
Extended Translation for Drives > 1GByte Disabled
Support more than two drives Enabled
  8. Press ESC twice to return to the main menu that shows the slot numbers.
  9. Press <ALT><ESC> to select the "System" drop down menu.
  10. Select "Exit"
  11. Select "Save configuration and exit" and follow to prompts to exit the configuration utility.

As with other Adaptec SCSI based systems the root disk should be set to ID 0 and the tape unit to ID 2.

Channel A of the Adaptec AIC-7770 is the top 50 way dual-in-line connector located at the top right hand side of the mother board.

Reboot the machine from the SCO N1 floppy and at the boot prompt enter "link". You wil then be asked for the name of the Boot Time Loadable Driver required - the name is "arad". The floppy containing the driver is labelled "AIC-7770 SCSI Utilities BTLD Driver for SCO UNIX" and the current version is 1.0L.

Specialix card

As with the XEN-LS II and XEN-PC Specialix configuration covered in IPB 3140, the card cannot use a RAM area that is cached. Therefore set the card's switches and link to SW1=0, SW2=D, LINK 1=0 (this to set the shared RAM address range to D0000-D7FFF), and disable the caching of this 32k RAM area by setting the "D0000 - D7FFF" option under the "Shadow RAM" section of the ROM BIOS Setup to "Disabled".

When installing the Specialix driver from custom, select the Use the card in polled mode by selecting this option from the Specialix custom installation utility.
